Hilandar is a Serbian Orthodox monastery located on the northern part of the Holy Mount Athos in Greece. The monastery was founded by Stefan Nemanja (Saint Simeon) and his son Saint Sava in 1198, as the legacy of the Nemanjić dynasty. Saint Simeon passed away in Hilandar in 1199. Later, Hilandar was supported by King Stefan Uroš I, King Milutin, Emperor Dušan, as well as Prince Lazar and the Branković family. With the establishment of the young Serbian state in the 19th century, the Obrenović and the Karađorđević families also helped the monastery. A large number of valuable manuscripts, charters, relics, as well as old icons are kept in Hilandar, the most famous of which is the Three-Handed Mother of God. Today, Hilandar is considered a spiritual and cultural treasure of the Serbs, and the Holy Mount Athos itself has been on the World Heritage List since 1988.
