Hilandar is a Serbian Orthodox monastery locatedon the northern part of the Holy Mount Athos in Greece. The monastery was foundedby Stefan Nemanja (Saint Simeon) and his son Saint Sava in 1198, as the legacyof the Nemanjić dynasty. Saint Simeon passed away in Hilandar in 1199. Later,Hilandar was supported by King Stefan Uroš I, King Milutin, Emperor Dušan, aswell as Prince Lazar and the Branković family. With the establishment of theyoung Serbian state in the 19th century, the Obrenović and the Karađorđevićfamilies also helped the monastery. A large number of valuable manuscripts,charters, relics, as well as old icons are kept in Hilandar, the most famous ofwhich is the Three-Handed Mother of God. Today, Hilandar is considered aspiritual and cultural treasure of the Serbs, and the Holy Mount Athos itself hasbeen on the World Heritage List since 1988.
