Ostrog is a men’s monastery, nested into avertical cliff on the Mount of Ostrog, 15 km from Nikšić. The name Ostrog comesfrom the older form of the Serbian word “sharp”. The Ostrog Monastery wasfounded by the Metropolitan of Herzegovina, Saint Basil of Ostrog (1610-1671).The upper part of the monastery consists of the Temple of the Holy Cross andthe Temple of the Presentation of the Most Holy Mother of God, where the relicsof Saint Basil of Ostrog rest. In the lower part of the monastery is the templeof the Holy Trinity. Between the Upper and Lower Monasteries there is a churchdedicated to the Holy Martyr Stanko. Pilgrims from all over the world,regardless of their religion, visit the monastery throughout the year. It isone of the most visited religious places in the Balkans.
