The Monastery of Gradac was built by the Queen Helen,the wife of King Uroš I, popularly known as Helen of Anjou, who was buriedthere in 1314. It was built in the last quarter of the 13th century, and lieson the slopes of Golija Mountain, near the town of Brvenik. The greatestflourishing of the monastery took place in the 14th century, when there weremany monks in it. In the times that came, the monastery went through difficultperiods, with a more serious renovation beginning only after the Second WorldWar. There are two churches in the monastery complex - one is dedicated to the MostHoly Mother of God, and the other to St. Nicholas. The appearance of QueenHelens endowment has great similarities with the temples of central andsouthern Italy. The Church of the Mother of God presents a skillful combinationof a large number of Gothic features with the traditional forms of the Raška School.
