The Savina Monastery, Orthodox heartand soul of Boka Kotorska, has threechurches in its complex. Legendhasitthatthe small church of Ascension of the Most Holy Mother of God datesback to 1030, while itis quite certain that in its present appearance it was built in the 15h century, during the reign of the duke Stefan VukčićKosača. Frescoesare the work of Lovro Dobrićević, painter from Kotor. ThereisalsotheChurchofSt. Sava, whosefoundationsaresaidtohavebeenconsecratedbySt. Sava himself in the 13th century, and which was also rebuilt in the 15th century. Finally, there is a beautiful big church ofthe Ascension of the Most Holy Mother of God which represents a synthesis ofdifferent styles – Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine with the elements ofOrthodox Baroque. It wasbuilt in the period from 1777 to 1799, by the master builder Nikola Foretićfrom the island of Korčula. The most important sacred object kept in thetreasury of the monastery is the cross of Saint Sava.
