The Monastery of Sopoćani is an endowment ofStefan Uroš I and is located near Novi Pazar. Its name comes from the OldSlavic word sopot, which means spring.The Church of the Holy Trinity was built around 1260 in the typical style ofthe Raška School - elongated base, the inevitable dome and Romanesque decorationson the façades. The interior ofthe church is adorned with frescoes that made the Monastery of Sopoćani famous,with the magnificent composition of the Assumption of the Mother of Godstanding out among them. Unfortunately, the monastery suffered destruction atthe end of the 17th century and will be abandoned for more than 250 years, withits reconstruction starting in 1929. Today, the Sopoćani Monastery is one ofthe most impressive Serbian cultural monuments, and in 1979 it was included inthe UNESCO World Heritage List.
