The Monastery of Mileševa is an endowment of KingVladislav, son of Stefan the First-Crowned, and is located not far fromPrijepolje. Mileševa was built in 1218 and 1219 in the Raška School style, and painted from 1222 to1228. The relics of Saint Sava, who passed away in Trnovo, were transferred toMileševa in 1237. Afterthat, Mileševa became the place ofpilgrimage. But in 1594, the Ottoman invaders took his relics to Belgrade andburned them on the Vračar Plateau. One of the first Serbian printing housesoperated in Mileševa from 1544 to 1557. The frescoes from Mileševa are among the most beautiful andsignificant works of Serbian fresco painting. The most precious frescoes arethose with portraits of the Nemanjić dynasty where they are shown together, withthe most famous fresco being the Angel at Christ’s Tomb (White Angel).
