The Monastery of Gračanica is an endowment of KingMilutin and is located 10 km from Pristina. It was built between 1315 and 1321,but only the church dedicated to the Ascension of the Most Holy Mother of God remainsof the monastery complex. The base of the temple is formed by two inscribed crosses,and the entire edifice with its five domes and its arches articulates into slopingmasses ascending towards the main dome. Gračanica has always been a spiritualand cultural center for Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija, and in the 16th centurythe first printing house was located there. The Gračanica paintings representthe greatest achievements of the school of painting at that time and are thework of the famous Thessalonica fresco-painters. In Gračanica, the line of the Nemanjićdynasty with 16 portraits was painted for the first time in a verticallyarranged composition.
