Protecting the northern borders of the empirein the first century AD, the Romans built a fortification on both sides of theDanube, on the site of the present day town of Golubac, called Vico Cupae. Inlater times, the Roman fortification was destroyed, and at the end of the 13thand the beginning of the 14th century, the medieval town of Golubac was erectedon a hill 4 km downstream. The Golubac Fortress is fanlike-shaped and consistsof three parts: the front, the back, and the upper town (with the citadel). Ithas a total of 10 towers and two large carriage gates. There are severallegends about the origin of the town’s name. One legend has it that theByzantine princess Helen was held captive in The Hat Tower, who due to hersadness and solitude kept doves as pets, thus the town was named Golubac aftera dove (golub). According to another legend, the town was named after thebeautiful girl Golubina, who refused the courtship of the Turkish pasha, and inorder to punish her, he tied her up to a barren rock sticking out of the wateras punishment.
