Kalemegdan is the mostbeautiful and largest park in Belgrade, but it is also an important culturaland historical complex, dominated by the Belgrade Fortress overlooking theconfluence of the Sava and the Danube rivers. Its name originates from the Turkishwords “kale” – town, that is, fortress, and “megdan” - field. The Turks alsocalled Kalemegdan Ficir-Bair, which means “a hill for contemplation”. By theorder of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic, the reconstruction of the plateau beganafter the surrender of the Fortress to the Serbs in 1867. The conceptualdesigns for the development of Kalemegdan were made by Belgrade’s first urbanplanner, Emilijan Josimovic. Kalemegdan is home to the Military Museum, theCvijeta Zuzoric Art Pavilion, and the Zoo. The park is adorned with a number ofmonuments honoring notable cultural and public figures, as well as the Monumentof Gratitude to France, erected as a sign of friendship and cooperation betweenSerbia and France during World War I.
