The Church of St. Mark in Tasmajdan was builtin the immediate vicinity of an old church dating from 1835, during the reignof Prince Milos Obrenovic. It was erected on the site where the Belgrade Pasharead the Sultan’s edict on granting autonomy to the Principality of Serbia. Thebenefactor of the old church was Lazar Panca, a merchant, and the church wasconsidered to be the tomb of the Obrenovic family. Unfortunately, it wasdestroyed during bombing in 1941. The present church was built from 1931through 1940, at the time of Alexander I Karadjordjevic. The Church of St. Markwas built in the Serbian-Byzantine style. The architects, Krstic brothers, wereinspired by Gracanica, and the mosaic above the entrance portal depicting theHoly Apostle Mark, was done by the painter Veljko Stanojevic in 1962.The church houses the tombs of its benefactorLazar Panca, the married couple Draga and Aleksandar Obrenovic, as well as thesarcophagus in which Emperor Dusan was buried.
