The Monastery of Studenica is an endowment ofStefan Nemanja and is located 57 km south of Kraljevo. It was built between1186 and 1196, when Stefan Nemanja abdicated in favor of his middle son Stefan,became a monk and was named Simeon. He then came to Studenica and stayed therefor two years, after which he went to the Holy Mount Athos, where he died.Saint Sava brought the relics of Saint Simeon to Studenica in 1207 and stayedthere as abbot. In Studenica, Sava writes the Studenica Typikon, whichregulates the order and organization of life in this monastic community.Studenica is one of the few sanctuaries that has preserved both the temple andthe entire complex with the walls, the entrance tower and the refectory of St.Sava in its authentic form. The most important church in Studenica is dedicatedto the Mother of God the Benefactress and it houses the beautiful fresco icon Mother of God of Studenica.
