The Monastery of Visoki Dečani is an endowment ofKing Stefan Uroš III of Dečani and is located at the foot of the ProkletijeMountains, 12 km from Peć. An inscription in the old Serbian, above thesouthern portal of the Church of the Ascension of Christ, tells us that thetemple took eight years to build and that it was completed in 1335. Fra Vita, amaster architect from Kotor, adorned the exterior in Romano-Gothic style, andthe interior in the so-called Raška style. Until then, no temple, eitherSerbian or Byzantine, had that many frescoes painted in it. A large number ofpainters worked on the painting of over a thousand scenes for about ten years(1338-1348). There is also a significant collection of icons in the temple, themost famous among them being the icon of the Moher of God of Dečani dating fromthe 14th century.
