St. Peter’s Church or the Church of the Holy ApostlesPeter and Paul is located in the immediate vicinity of Novi Pazar and is theoldest monument of ecclesiastic architecture in Serbia. On the site of thischurch there was an early Christian temple, which was built again over a burialmound from the 5th century BC, which was discovered only in 1957. St. Peter’schurch had great importance in the history of the Serbian people. It was inthis church that Stefan Nemanja was converted to the Orthodox Christianity.There he was enthroned as the Serbian Grand Prefect, and there he abdicated in1196 in favor of his son Stefan Nemanjić. Also, in 1219, Saint Sava designatedthe Church of Saint Peter as the seat of the Eparchy of Ras. Various layers ofarchitecture and fresco iconography have been preserved in St. Peter’s Church,with the first ones originating from the 9th century, the next from the 11thcentury, and the third most likely after the fresco painting of the ĐurđeviStupovi monastery
