The construction of the parliamentary edificeaccording to the design of the architect Jovan Ilkic began in 1907, when KingPeter I Karadjordjevic laid the foundation stone of the future House of thePeople’s Representatives. Due to wars, lack of funds, changes in designs, aswell as the formation of a larger state (Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes),the building was built in several phases. In the last phase, the main designerwas the architect Nikola Krasnov, who also did the entire interior designtogether with all the elements, such as furniture and lighting. The parliamentbuilding was completed in 1936. In 1938, two remarkable sculptures, the work ofthe famous sculptor Toma Rosandic, were placed in front of the main entrance tothe House of the National Assembly. The author named this composition of bronzehorses and their bronze tamers “Black horses at play, and with them greatheroes”. The National Assembly is adorned with frescoes, numerous paintings andsculptures of inestimable value.
